About the Artist

Lee Wilson Crowell

After retiring from over thirty years in education, the artist , Lee Wilson Crowell, decided to pursue her life-long love of painting and drawing. As a child growing up in Texas, she recalls attempting to draw and color the beauty of the Texas landscape: the wildflowers, birds, trees,…

Since retiring, she has enjoyed taking various classes and workshops from many artists. She has taken watercolor classes at Queens College, studied under artist Harris Holt in Charlotte, and Susan Crouch from Statesville. After being introduced to pastels by her sister-in-law, Brevard Barnette Crowell, a pastelist in Charlotte, she has taken workshops and classes from artists such as Shelley Keefer at CPCC, Virginia Dauth, Terry Ludwig, Greg Barnes, Susan Mayfield, and Susan Ogilvie, to name a few, all artists with national recognition.

The artist is a member of the Piedmont Pastel Society, the Cabarrus Art Guild, and the Stanly County Art Guild. She has received “Best of Show” and an Honorable Mention in recent art shows. Jurors statement of her work was recently made: “Overall successful use of color choices and confident mark-making evoke a peaceful scene. Well executed in terms of composition and presentation.” This is what she hopes to achieve with each painting. She continues to study, practice, and take classes for “there is so much to learn, to understand about light, color, composition, and a great need to constantly expand the artistic skills.”
